Irreverent Religious Relevance?

I’m late to the party with this brief post, but I thought it was worth penning nonetheless.

Despite the fact that I say a prayer with my children every night before bed and also before flying, scuba diving, or climbing on a motorcycle, I consider myself a relatively secular agnostic. My wife, however, is a practicing Catholic. Thus, we observe Lent. This means, of course, that I should have published this post before Ash Wednesday. Alas, tonight will have to do…

The thought occurred to me that since observant folks typically give up something during Lent, and we are in the midst of an unprecedented ammunition supply crisis, Lent this year would represent an excellent opportunity to “give up” live fire and do something extra in the form of 40 days of dry fire. You certainly don’t need to be Catholic or even religious to adopt this strategy, and I guarantee that your shooting ability will benefit. Plus, a little seafood in the diet certainly can’t hurt!

I’m going to give it a go starting tomorrow, and I invite our readers to do the same. I’m personally going to supplement my dry fire with some Turkish Getups with a kettlebell, just because I need the exercise.

I have not shot a live round since September (coinciding with the start of a new role at work). After Easter, I’m going to make it a point to go to the range and see how my ability has fared over the course of the past several months. Hopefully, some dry fire will offset the inevitable degradation. I’m thinking the FBI Qualification will provide a quantifiable standard that I have prior experience with and record of. I’ll report back here.

In the meantime, join me in 40 (or at least 37) days of dry fire. Even if it’s just 25-30 trigger presses per day, that’s nearly a case worth of trigger work and manipulation. Make every trigger press count. You are hard wiring fundamental movements. Your dry fire routine can be as simple or as complex as you desire. I recommend simple to achieve consistency and to make the goal achievable.

As always, thanks for reading. Questions and comments are welcome, and please share our content with like minded individuals. By all accounts, there are nearly 8 million new gun owners. Much of our early writing is relevant to their new reality. If you know of a new gun owner, please refer them to our archives. And finally, support of the blog by using our Amazon Affiliate link is always appreciated. I know content has been rather sparse of late (at least coming from me), but the blog is alive and well. Take care folks, we face an uncertain future, as always.

  1. Indeed, dry fire is the key. In 2020 I only fired 1100 rounds of ammunition, most of which was done in February and March. After that I did not shoot until September, a couple hundred rounds only. Then, no shooting until December on Christmas Day. On Christmas morning at my folks house (they have an outdoor range) my first shots were a failure drill, clean, in 1.86 (to the down zero 4 inch circle in the head box). So, yeah, dry Fire works. I happened to film it, you can see it here:

  2. Do you have kids? How pathetic of a grown man to spend this much time maintaining a wanna be soldier website. If you have kids. you’re a pathetic father. Spend time with them rather than maintaining this stupid website. If you’re a husband, you’re a pathetic spouse. That’s the truth, no matter the bullshit explanation or excuse you have for it.

    1. Wow. Such vitriol. Your screen name is fitting, and I pity you. I’ll let my wife and kids be the measure of me as a husband and father. And if you think this is a “wanna be soldier website,” you obviously haven’t read any of it. Any further comments from you will not be approved, so enjoy your 30 seconds of fame. And stop pissing in your own Cheerios. Your outlook might improve.
